SOLO AND DEVISED PERFORMANCE

Beethoven’s 9th, the first solo performance commissioned by BAC in May 2004.

PPP, a solo piano performance was shown at the Clore Studio, Royal Opera House, Goldsmithʼs College, and the Purcell Rooms in July and September 2004.

Conceived and directed Dinner, for an international cast, commissioned by Spoleto Festival, Walker Arts Center (Minneapolis), Jacob’s Pillow and Glasgow 1990. Dinner toured the US and Europe 1990-91.

1999: wrote, composed and performed The Lost Songs of Opal Lorbin at the Purcell Rooms.

MUSIC

Scores commissioned for Site Specific Dance:

1) Genesis Canyon, a Dance Umbrella Commission at the Natural History Museum. The piece, by choreographer Stephan Kopowitz won a Time Out Dance and Performance Award. This composition combined live vocal and recorded sound, with 40 piece choir, and guests, Barnaby Stone and Sarah Jane Morris.

2) Babel Index, a 2nd D.U. commission, at the British Library (1998)

3) Kohle Korper, (1999) a piece for 50 dancers, in an old cooking factory produced and commisionedby the Choreographische Zentrum, Essen.

Scores for theatre:

The Shoe Shop of Desire (BAC), A River Sutra (3 Mills Island) and BBC Radio 3: Between the Ears with Ansuman Biswas. Composed numerous piano pieces and songs, some of which were performed in PPP at the Clore Studio (Royal Ballet, Covent Garden), Purcell Rooms (South Bank) and Goldsmith’s College.

1982-84 Singing – acapella group, Dancing with the Dog.

1986-91 writing music for Ralf Ralf – performances and soundtracks for their videos.

1991-99 Co-composer, director and singer with acapella performance group, Hot Mouth, (Dublin Theatre Festival,  Manhattan Theatre Club, Spoleto Festival and Peacock Theatre, London).

 

VIDEO

Since 2004 I have been making Facedances, a public art project, based on videos of people dancing with their face to their favourite music. Facedances has been developed both as a performance, and as public art with the help of the ACE, the National Theatre Studio, Metal and the Place Theatre.

RALF RALF

Formed Ralf Ralf with his brother in 1986. Since then they have sporadically been devising, directing and performing their own shows.

The Summit, made in 1987, has been performed in over thirty different countries, It has won awards in New York and France. More recently The Summit has played at the Hong Kong, New Zealand International and Perth Festivals.

Its Staring you Right in the Face (Royal Court) in 1991, subsequently touring internationally.

Ralf Ralf have made videos for Channel 4 and MTV.

In 1993 they performed a concert of their music at the Purcell Rooms.

Us Boys We Multitask, was shown at BAC in October 2003.

In September 2003, the South Bank Centre presented a revival of The Summit. The Summit toured India in January 2004, played at the Kaai Theatre, Brussels, in July 2004, and played in Teatro Avenida, Mozambique in September 2004. and In Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt in 2006.

 

TEACHING

Has taught movement, performance, devising, improvisation to BA and MA level.

Has taught at London School of Contemporary Dance (the Place), Trinity Laban, Goldsmith’s, E15 Acting School, Nottingham Trent University, Leicester Polytechnic, Rose Bruford College, London Institute and North London University.

He has taught workshops in Singapore, Berlin, Brazil, New York, Hong Kong. Bangkok and Wellington (NZ).
